Simon Gets A New Name (20101102)

… Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).”  (John 1:42b, NIV)

Here is a reason for all of us to have great hope in what Jesus alone can accomplish in each and every one of us.  As a man Simon was certainly passionate, but he was unsteady and unreliable in his passion.  One moment it was there, the next it might be gone.  Yet, Jesus called Simon, with all his sins and shortcomings, to enter into the greatest leadership training the world would ever know.  And in the same moment that the call was given and received, Jesus looked into the eyes of an unsteady man named Simon and gave him the new name of Peter, which means “rock”.  Where in the past Peter had been unsteady and unreliable, Jesus would guide him to become an unwavering leader in the early Christian church.

And so we can take confidence, in spite of our own sins and shortcomings, in the One who is still calling us.  And his name is Jesus.

Living Big In Jesus
