In John 3:9-10 we read, “‘How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 ‘You are Israel’s teacher,’ said Jesus, ‘and do you not understand these things?’”
How sad it is when a man is known mainly for the clubs and councils to which he belongs over and above his wisdom, kindnesses, generosity and acts of service. Such seems to be the case of Nicodemus who was known to be a member of “the Jewish ruling counsel.” Nicodemus belonged to the right organization, was a leader and a teacher among his people, yet he did not have the right kind of understanding about either the things of this world or of the kingdom of God. Nicodemus’ credentials were found in the club he belonged rather than quality of man that he had become.
In regard to things that truly mattered in life Nicodemus missed the boat. He may have had prestige in this world, but up to this point he possessed little understanding about the Kingdom of God.
Nicodemus was like many teachers of both his day and ours that once again stand in need of being taught by Jesus!
