What Do You Have Zeal For? (20101124)

“In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.  15  So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.  16  To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”  17  His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”  (John 2:14-17, NIV)

It is an eye opener isn’t it?  The very people who were charged with keeping the law and the temple worship were breaking the commandments they were charged to keep!  Charged by the Lord to lead people to the riches of heaven, they sought wealth in money.  Charged with reminding the people of the awe of God, they sought power for themselves.  Charged with serving in the kingdom, they set themselves as lords above their brothers.  All of this abuse to God’s flock because their zeal was for the things of this world.  Might our people be purified as we learn to have zeal for the kingdom of Jesus?
