“The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.” (John 1:35-37, NIV)
Now that is the right spirit. John had spent no little time and no little devotion gathering a following around him as he made straight the path for the Lord, but when the time was right, that is, when the Lord appeared John’s up and coming ministry gives way and humbly points the believers to Jesus.
How about you? Maybe you have walked with Jesus for years. When all is said and done, who is it that you are pointing others to, is it yourself or is it to the Lord? When the question was asked of John the Baptist he rightly chose to point them to Jesus.
