In John 3:9 Nicodemus asks Jesus, “How can this be?”
I see it happen often in the church? We forget the reason that we are here. We forget that the Lord has called us to serve and love our fellow man. We gather for our classes and our worship assemblies and leave feeling that we have accomplished our task, our mission for Jesus. We feel good about our place in the kingdom of God.
But we all too easily forget the reason we exist. The apostle Paul reminds us saying, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciles to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20, NIV). It was much the same for Nicodemus, but he had forgotten, as many in his day had. You see, in Genesis 18:18 we read, “Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.” Ultimately that would come about because it was through Abraham that the Christ would come to the world. Nicodemus may have forgotten this fine point; let us who are in Christ not make the same mistake.
