“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17, NIV).
It must have been a moment of exhilaration for the Apostle John to write this simple line. “the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” Certainly John knew that the law of Moses was good. But no one was able to perfectly keep the law. So we all have become law-breakers, and the penalty for being a law-breaker is wrath. It is judgment, suffering and finally death. So the law in the end brings wrath, it brings death.
Ah! But in Christ we have something different, we have the gospel, the good news. And the good news is that in Christ we have grace and truth. Where we could not live the perfect life, Jesus did! And he, having died on the cross for our sins against the law, we through him have received grace. That is we have received that which we could not earn, demand or gain in and of ourselves. We have received through Christ, eternal life! The grace and truth that what we could not obtain by any means of our own has been freely offered up to us through Jesus Christ, our Creator, Sustainer and Savior!
